Technology for 21st Century Learners in Northwest Minnesota

We have a Windows network (Windows Server 2003).  The majority of the workstations are running Windows XP Pro.  Authentication works just fine on those computers.  We recently replaced some old computers with new ones running Windows 7 Pro.  I am having strange profile issues......Often I get a "you are being logged on with a temporary profile" sort of message and nothing is saved when the user logs off.  It was my understanding that Windows 7 does not recognize Windows XP profiles and so when a user logs on from a Windows 7 computer for the first time, a new profile is created (same profile name with V.2 after it).  This appears to be happening for some users and not for others, I cannot figure out why that is.  Is there something I should know about running the two different operating systems on the same network?  Note: students go back and forth between the old and the new computers.

Thanks!

I'm guessing that you are using roaming profiles?  If so I don't think there is any way around this but to drop roaming profiles if you want users to log onto xp and win7 machines without any hassels.  I would drop the roaming profiles and go with folder redirection instead.  In my opinion folder redirection is much better than roaming profiles.

Here are two links on how to set up folder redirection-

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/274443

(I would also only redirect My Documents and Desktop)

Yes, they are roaming profiles.  I already have the My Documents redirected, I will read both articles you recommended.  Thank you so much.
