Technology for 21st Century Learners in Northwest Minnesota

I received the following from my web hosting vender. Did any of you receive this notice from your venders? Anybody know of the legitimateness of this?

The FCC gives public schools until December 30 to comment on the importance of web hosting as an E-rate eligible service for the 2011 funding year (July 2011-June 2012). Please respond today to the FCC: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/upload/display

Please enter 02-6 in the box on the FCC form where the Proceeding Number is requested.

We are writing to inform you that on December 1st, the FCC tentatively confirmed that web hosting should be removed as an eligible service for E-rate beginning in the 2011 funding year (July 2011-June 2012). This position, stated in section 37 http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-09-105A1.pdf , shows a lack of understanding regarding the current and future direction of electronic communication in the school environment. Specifically you see that the FCC has commented that “because, while many school districts find web hosting to be a useful way to post information for parents and the community, we do not believe it is essential to the educational purposes of schools and libraries.”

The school or district website is a critical component in the effort to improve school performance at every level. Our research shows that across all constituents, including parents, student and teachers, demand for leveraging a school and district website as the primary communication channel is at an all-time high.

We know that your website plays a crucial role in improving communications and building strong communities. SchoolCenter is actively working with other companies in the education technology industry and with K-12 associations to make our voice heard. We urge you to do the same.

By rallying together now with a formal comment on the FCC comment site, we can ensure that E-rate continues to support the movement to bring school communication into the 21st century. We are providing a sample letter (below) for the purposes of assisting you in your submission. To submit this letter or additional comments please visit: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/ecfs/upload/display . Please enter 02-6 in the box on the FCC form where the Proceeding Number is requested.

Without your action today, E-rate funding for your web hosting will be eliminated by July 2011.

I received notice of it, but certainly not from web hosting vendors. Mary Mehsiokmer recommends always signing your contracts with "contingent upon erate funding".
