Technology for 21st Century Learners in Northwest Minnesota

I recieved an e-mail with pdf (attached) of apps for ipad and itouch. I am copy and pasting below the different links that were included.

Here's my personally compiled link of URLS where teachers explain how they use the iPod in education, as well as a list of some that I've seen used. Again, Corey will be able to discuss some of the uses [though nobody has every application!]

- FREE BOOKS in Podcast format on iTunes U
go to Lit2Go
it's from the University of S. Florida College of Education.
The public domain books [Huckleberry Finn, etc.] are available so you can hear and read along. Books are categorized under each grade [K-12] plus Spanish.

- Sampling of reading apps for early readers:
many!
ABC Trace [learning letters]
SeeReadSay [99 cents]
Sight Words
SightWords First Grade
Site Words [separate app; is free]

- URL for a teacher's iPod reading program:
http://projecticanread.com/

- iTunes Tip: To quickly find exactly what you need, execute a Power Search-->in theiTunes application, click on Power Search [right-hand side of iTunes store's home screen], then pull down "applications" to limit it your search to applications, and type in what you are looking for ("science," "reading," "Chinese"). You can also limit your search to Education.

- Responseware's Review 360
A lot of large districts are adopting Review360 as an intervention/special ed/teacher tool.
It is a program with a per-district fee, but it allows the teacher to review the needs of the student, create mobile IEP, and it contains helpful intervention choices, instructions for teachers.

The app is, of course, on iTunes Store, and I've included a screen dump of the application for you.

- iSchedule--allows you to know all the schedules of the students, such as that Jimmy Jones is in algebra for 3rd hour, and his emergency contact info. The app is free; the company makes their money by putting your student info system into their format.

- Dragon Dictate: speak into the micorophone [ear bud microphone or the thumb-tack microphone] and it translates it to text. Free program limitation is about 12 words. From the Dragon Naturally speaking people.

• Escondido Union School District, California: Their students used the iPod for English Language Learning and experienced 32-, 44- and 64-word per minute increases. These results far outpaced the normal 5-10 words-per-minute fluency progress. Accuracy also increased.

• Jose Martin Middle School, Union City, NJ: ESL students consider the iPod “a global must-have for increasing motivation and achievement.” In the first year of using the iPod, 50% of students went from the ESL program to an all-English program, a switch that usually takes between 3-6 years. Using the iPod also improved student attendance and test scores.

• State Government of Victoria official report [Australia] stated that the iPod Touch “stimulated teachers and students to work creatively together to improve literacy and numeracy.”

• Wayzata, MN School District: Uses the iPod Touch as in-class polling/voting devices. The iPod Touch is a multiple-use, rather than single-use, device.

To use the iPod Touch as in-class polling/voting devices, you can use Review 360

and eClicker [teacher is $25.00; free for students]. You don't need a dedicated clicker device!

- Ghost reader -- and app from the Proloquo to go folks has an app that not only reads text but it has a ball that indicates the word that is spoken
• Eden Prairie High School, MN: This PC-based school has been using the iPod Touch as “library check-out” devices for Algebra classes. They capture the classroom content from their SmartBoards and make them available on the iPod Touches as podcasts. The students have experienced a 10% increase in grades. This increase was not experienced when the classroom content was just posted on the web. The school is expanding the program to science, physics and world languages.
