Technology for 21st Century Learners in Northwest Minnesota

This memo is about the versions of Pearson’s online testing software that will deliver Minnesota’s computer-delivered assessments in the 2009-2010 school year. TestNav 6.6, the current version and the one districts used to deliver the spring 2009 online tests, will continue to be used through December 9, 2009 for the GRAD retests and the fall field test for Mathematics MCA-III.
Apple plans to release Mac OS X Snow Leopard in September of 2009. Because TestNav 6.6 will not function with computers using Mac OS X Snow Leopard, and Pearson requires all state users to use the same version of the 6.x series of TestNav, an upgrade to TestNav 6.9 is required for all districts. This new version will start to be used with the January 2010 GRAD retests and continue to be used with the spring testing, regardless of whether students test on a Mac or PC. Districts should not upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard on computers to be used for GRAD retests or the fall field test until TestNav 6.9 is available for installation in December.

Date Version Notes
Now through December 9, 2009 TestNav 6.6.010 The version currently installed will be used through December for GRAD retests and the Fall Field Test of Mathematics MCA-III.
December 10, 2009 and beyond TestNav 6.9 The new version requires a full reinstallation.
Spring 2010 TestNav 6.9 No further updates beyond TestNav 6.9 are planned, unless absolutely necessary.

Minnesota considered using TestNav 7.0 this year, a new web-based test engine under development. Although the software has advantages over TestNav 6, the Minnesota Department of Education requires that all operational test forms fully meet its quality assurance expectations. The date when TestNav 7.0 would be able to deliver Minnesota’s figural response items is too late in the schedule to prepare test forms for the spring of 2010. Therefore, it will not be possible to use TestNav 7.0 this year.
PearsonAccess will continue to be used for the administrative tasks involved in preparing for online tests.
