TestNav8 - iOS and macOS Sierra Not Supported

Apple recently released iOS 10 and macOS Sierra; however, Pearson does not currently support these for use with TestNav because of a possible security issue with a feature introduced in these versions.

Pearson is working closely with Apple to determine options for eliminating the security vulnerability in future releases of iOS 10 and macOS Sierra.

Until Apple eliminates this security vulnerability, TestNav will display an error and the student will not be able to test, if a user/student:

  • Starts the TestNav iOS app on iOS 10 (also applies to item samplers)
  • Starts the TestNav Desktop app on macOS Sierra (also applies to item samplers)
  • Attempts to sign in to a kiosk-mode test, using Firefox on macOS Sierra

Students may access item samplers through a supported browser on an iPad via the Item Samplers Page. Access Item Samplers on the Student Resources Page of PearsonAccess... (PearsonAccess Next > Student Resources > Item Samplers).

Details regarding TestNav 8 iOS and macOS support are available in the TestNav 8 – iOS and macOS Sierra Not Supported bulletin on the TestNav 8 Online Support page under Technical Bulletins. View the Technical Bulletins (PearsonAccess Next > TestNav 8 Online Support (under Quick Links) > Technical Bulletins).

View TestNav system requirements (Pearson Assessment Support > TestNav 8 > TestNav System Requirements) for a list of current operating systems supported by TestNav.

TestNav8 - iOS and Kiosk Mode Test Time Limit

Although TestNav does not support iOS 10.x, TestNav continues to support iOS versions 9.3.2 and higher. Due to iOS specifications, applications running in kiosk mode have specified time limits before automatically taking the device out of kiosk mode. This affects students using TestNav in kiosk mode. The maximum time TestNav remains in kiosk mode after a student signs in is 3 hours on the iOS versions 9.3.x.

Recommendations for testing:

  • Before the testing session, determine whether any students will likely exceed the allotted testing time in kiosk mode.
  • If a student is expected to exceed the time limit for kiosk mode testing, plan a break for the student to sign out before the time limit expires. The Test Monitor must then resume the student in PearsonAccess Next and have the student sign in again.
  • If the time limit expires, kiosk mode stops and the student is exited from the test. The Test Monitor must resume the student, restart the iPad, and have the student sign in again.

Details regarding iOS Test Time Limits are available in the TestNav 8 – iOS and Kiosk-Mode Test Time Limit bulletin on the TestNav 8 Online Support page under Technical Bulletins. View the Technical Bulletins (PearsonAccess Next > TestNav 8 Online Support (under Quick Links) > Technical Bulletins).
