Digikey uses this company and service is great, you don't need to give a PO or Pay upfront.

they will check your drive and let you know if they can get the data or not.

there isn't a charge if you decide not to and they will even send the drive back.

 

Kroll Ontrack has always charged a lofty price to have your drive looked at.

The best do-it-yourself utility I have come across is Spinrite.  When my High School Principals hard drive crashed and I couldn't access the data (even when plugged in as a second drive into a different system), Spinrite was able to recover the drive.  It ran for 2.5 days, but the drive was readable again when it was done.
